Leadership
Rev. Jay C. Hogewood, Ph.D.
Rev. Jay C. Hogewood, Ph.D. joined University United Methodist Church as Senior Pastor in July 2026. A seasoned pastor, preacher, and scholar, he brings nearly three decades of ministry experience and a deep commitment to helping congregations engage Scripture thoughtfully, cultivate authentic discipleship, and embody Christ’s hospitality in their communities.
Before returning to University United Methodist Church, Rev. Hogewood served as Senior Pastor of Rayne Memorial United Methodist Church in New Orleans. His previous appointments include St. John’s United Methodist Church, Ingleside United Methodist Church, St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, and University United Methodist Church in Baton Rouge, where he served as Pastor of Congregational Care. His ministerial journey began in Baptist congregations before entering the United Methodist tradition, providing him with a broad appreciation for the richness and diversity of Christian life and practice.
Rev. Hogewood holds a Bachelor of Arts in English and History from Samford University, a Master of Divinity from Baylor University's George W. Truett Theological Seminary, and a Ph.D. in Hebrew Bible and Theological Hermeneutics from Brite Divinity School at Texas Christian University. His academic formation informs a ministry that values both intellectual rigor and spiritual depth, seeking to connect the complexities of the biblical text with the realities of everyday life.
Throughout his ministry, he has remained particularly passionate about biblical preaching, small-group discipleship, and fostering communities marked by genuine welcome and belonging. He believes the church is at its best when it creates space for meaningful relationships, faithful service, and transformative encounters with God's grace.
He and his wife, Karrie, have two adult children, Beck and Mariah, and share their home with two beloved dogs, Otis and Mila. He is honored to return to University United Methodist Church and looks forward to partnering with the congregation as it continues its longstanding tradition of faithful witness, thoughtful engagement, and service to the Baton Rouge community.
